Benefits and Universal Credit
What benefits are and how to claim them
Go back
Benefits and Universal Credit refer to money given to people by the government to support them, for example if someone has a disability, for parents with children, or if someone needs support with their income to manage the cost of living.
What is Universal Credit?
Universal Credit is a monthly benefit for people who have a low income, including people who find themselves out of work. It’s designed to support people with living and housing costs.
MoneyHelper has useful webpages that explain what Universal Credit is, who can claim it, and how to apply. The gov.uk Universal Credit page also has information.
What other benefits are there?
Whilst Universal Credit is the main benefit offered by the UK government, other benefits include child benefit, benefits for people who are disabled, and Jobseeker’s Allowance (JSA).
MoneyHelper gives more information about benefits, as well as a benefits calculator tool. The gov.uk website and Citizens Advice also explain more about different benefits.
How do people claim benefits?
Processes for claiming different benefits might not always be the same. It’s important to check whether you are eligible for a certain benefit. Some benefits claims might require you to provide supporting information (for example, details about your income).
For Universal Credit, MoneyHelper has a step by step guide on how to apply. Citizens Advice has information on different benefits, including how to claim them.
