Support if you're unwell or have a disability

What support is available and how to access it

There is financial support available for people who have a health condition, experience a period of severe illness or have a disability. Additionally, support is available if you are a carer for someone who is ill or disabled.

What support is available?

What a person is entitled to claim depends on their circumstances. MoneyHelper has several webpages with information about benefits for people who are sick, disabled or a carer. The gov.uk website also breaks down different benefits and support.

If you need advice about these benefits, organisations like Citizens Advice may be able to help you.

You might also want to take a look at our How to Adult webpage on benefits and Universal Credit.

Benefits calculators

A benefits calculator helps to figure out what you might be entitled to. These are free to use on:

Carers and young carers

A carer is someone who provides unpaid care for a friend or family member due to illness, disability, a mental health problem or an addiction. A young carer is someone between the age of 16 – 25 who provides such support. Various support is available for carers – you can find out more from the Carers Trust.

Study Higher supports young carers as part of its outreach work. You might find it helpful to visit our How to Adult page for young carers.
